3D Studio Max has been the top choice of 3D artists for several years and it's easy to see why. A huge number of useful tools for getting realistic results. You'll need a bloody good system though, especially when you get to the fun part - rendering. To be honest though, I started out with Cinema 4D and for the moment it's still my first choice because it is incedibly flexible and has been improving at a solid rate and even won the best 3D Software title at MacWorld 2006.

Worst:Eats up system resources, complicated for beginners.
